What is backup software?
Backup software is a product that automatically makes backup copies of existing files. It allows you to automatically copy, download, and/or upload data to your computer and various other storage options, such as remote servers or network disks, depending on the backup schedules you have set up. It is a program designed to mirror data or create an exact copy of files you have, using a long series of algorithms to successfully archive data. It usually works with a task scheduler, which allows you to run the program on cue or on a set schedule. Aside from that, the software can also perform a number of other scheduled tasks.
Purpose
Usually, computers perform the tasks laid out by an IT professional. By utilizing a user-friendly interface, you can easily perform and complete these tasks yourself. One of these tasks is backing up your computer files. Computers that are linked on a larger network managed by an IT professional seldom experience backup problems. However, in the case of personal computers or small business networks, the majority of the time these computers go without being backed up. So, whenever unforeseen events occur, from inexperienced users to acts of God, computers without backup software or online backup applications can easily fall victim to data loss. The main purpose of the software and backup solutions is to prevent accidental loss of important data.
How it works
To back up your data, backup software initially performs drive imaging or duplication. The copies are then stored on another computer or other storage devices, such as CD's, DVD's, thumb drives, external hard drives, dedicated backup device, or an online backup solution. Copied files are usually compressed to size them down and in the event of a disaster; these compressed copies are used to restore a computer, thereby saving your important data.
Scheduling backup tasks
Most backup software products perform file backups depending on the time and schedule you have set. However, to have an ideal backup application it would require software that runs continuously. With continuous backup running, the computer automatically updates and saves any changes you have made on your computer in real-time. This way, you significantly increase the security and protection that you need for important business data and file archives, especially when you are away or your computer is left in idle state.
Is backup software necessary?
